What is Counselling or Coaching?

A counsellor or coach provides a unique space for you to speak in confidence to someone outside your personal situation. Talking helps you to process and cope with life’s intense situations, and gain greater clarity in your own self-understanding. Some issues people commonly seek counselling for include:

Coach/Counsellor/Psychologist/Psychiatrist?

Coach - Coaches usually say they don’t do
counselling. I say you can’t coach unless you clear the way.

Counsellor - specific training in counselling
techniques and philosophies, and may have training in psychology.

Psychologist - has a degree in psychology. May have
counselling training.

Psychiatrist - a medical doctor who has additional
training in psychology. May have counselling training. Can prescribe
psychotropic drugs.

  • getting “unstuck” in life
  • improving relationships
  • coping with the effects of trauma or loss
  • controlling addictions
  • coping with or curing phobias
  • creating greater self-acceptance and self-esteem
  • finding and releasing old patterns of behaviour which no longer serve
    our best interest
  • support for emotional and spiritual self-development

Counselling is a personal commitment to your own journey.

Privacy

Life Coaching and Counselling are private experiences shared by client and coach/counsellor. What is said in our sessions is strictly confidential. I am a member of the Australian Counselling Association, and I adhere to the Association’s Code of Ethics and respect your right to confidentiality.

When I refer you to another practitioner, for example to an acupuncturist for bodywork, I will disclose to that person only the information they need to make their treatment with you as effective as possible.

I am required by law to resport to the relevant agencies if you intend harm to yourself or to others; and in certain cases the notes I make can be required by courts; but these are the only exclusions to the confidentiality agreement I will ask you to sign before we begin working together.
